Evaluation

I have tried to follow most of the conventions in my media work, in the ways I have stuck to a 3 colours scheme and it features a mast head and a plug. One thing I have done differently when following the conventions of the other college magazines I have seen, is that my main image features two people instead of just a mid-shot of one person.  I wanted to get more of a feel for the college so asked Jay (the head teacher) and also featured a student from college. Even though it is different I do like the image I have used as the main image and I think it is appropriate.

I think the magazine appeals to students and also parents. I used a colour scheme of white, grey and lilac which I thought gave a good range of colours but wasn’t too bright and bold, I wanted my college magazine to appeal to parents as well, which were looking for a good college for their children. I tried to draw in my target audience of students in, by featuring photos from the college fresher’s event inside and also using a plug for money off stationary, which potential readers would actually want and find useful. I tried to represent college students in the image (by having a student) but also the members off staff, which I think would appeal to potential students. By having them both on the image, I think it represents the idea that everyone works together and students have good support and help from the staff.

I have tried to address my audience by drawing them in with the plug and also using a plug quote, which is quite a statement to make them want to read on and find out more about what Wyke and the magazine has to offer. I also tried to make the magazine appeal by having the main story interviews with past students, because that’s what people are interested in, if they are deciding to come here. Or want information on different courses. It would also appeal to current students to see what the students being interviewed are doing, or planning on doing in the future.

Throughout creating my magazine cover and uploading to the blog I have developed new skills, including presenting my initial ideas on a prezi, which is something I’ve never done before. Also I have got a better feel for using Photoshop, which is a program which has really benefitted me knowing how to use! I also learnt the conventions for the magazine its self. It was really useful and interesting finding out the different processes in media used to draw in the audience etc. that I didn’t know already. For example using the pull quote, I had never noticed before that it was a technique used to draw the reader in, to wanting to buy and read your magazine as you are giving then a little insight of what there is to read in the magazine. My first idea was to have a picture of the college as my main image, throughout the development process I changed my mind and knew I wanted a person or people. I thought people could relate more if they could see actual people from the college and it would be more real. If I were to change anything I think I would use photo Photoshop further and edit the photo, so it is in front of the title (just part of their heads) because I think this is a professional look. When the photo is over lapping with the title, I have noticed it is common on magazine and college magazine front covers.

I have noticed that a common covention seen for all these college magazines is that they feature a student from the college or maybe 2 people students or college related.

Conventions Analysis of NME magazine front cover

Peer feedback before final Liiar analysis changes and original liiar analysis

Peer feedback – Emily – One of the strengths of your work is that you have focused a lot on the connotations of the magazine, and this is great to show you have a good understanding of representation. You have also written quite a lot for the language section, which is great. For time management you could try and finish all the magazine covers today, so you can focus on the double page spread and contents page. As for presentation, it’s good that you have used an image of the magazine on every slide as this helps the readers to keep relating back to the magazine.

Danielle feedback:

From what you have done you have done a good piece of work. However you could have written more so you could dedicate some much more needed time to your work as you do have a good standard coming along from reading what you have, however there isn’t enough writing there and if you could write more in the way that you are doing that would be great. I your language analysis is also really good and reading through it you can tell you really understand what is going on, think improvements could be writing more and working better with your time, as timing is very important. But despite that you have done well what you do have and if you carry on like that you will have conducted a good LIIAR analysis.

I agree that I need to work better in my time after completing my language slide I understand more now what to write, at first I didn’t know what to write but after getting positive feedback on what I’ve done is right I know I’m along the right lines.
